Letters from the Sun to Human Beings – On Connection
Dear children of the blue planet,
Last week, on July 12th, something extraordinary happened. That naughty Moon passed in front of me and, for a few minutes, millions of you stopped and lifted your eyes towards the sky.
You stopped driving, scrolling, rushing from one thing to another, and looked up. Some of you gathered with your friends, others stood barefoot on beaches or climbed mountains to see me disappear. For a brief moment, you were fully there.
What I loved most was not that you were looking at me, although I must confess I enjoyed the attention 😊. It was what happened to you while you were looking. You were present. You were together. You were outside, looking at the sky with wonder. And for some of you, it awakened the wonderful feeling of belonging to something much larger than yourselves.
In those few minutes, I saw you reconnecting, which is precisely what I want to speak about today. Because there is something much more profound happening every time you come back to yourselves, to one another and to nature.
You heal. And I love this word of yours, because hidden inside its history is precisely what I am trying to tell you. Heal, health and whole belong to the same ancient family of words. To heal is, in its oldest sense, to become whole again. And this is precisely what happens when you reconnect.
Sometimes, especially during the busy months of the year, you end up running on autopilot, ignoring your bodies, losing touch with your feelings, putting on a mask to fit in or seeking constant control. You know what I mean. You enter the doing mode and slowly lose touch with being, the place where all that doing finds its meaning. You become so busy performing that, little by little, you lose connection with yourselves, with each other, with all beings and with nature, leaving little space for any deeper or spiritual dimension of life.
My dear children, take advantage of these slower summer days to come back to yourselves, to notice what you feel, to listen to your inner voice. Let your loved ones see the unedited version of you.
The body is perhaps the most immediate doorway back to yourselves. Get out of your head for a moment and come back to your body. Listen to it and start noticing what it tells you. Emotions often manifest as physical sensations: a tight chest, a knot in your stomach, a racing heart. Stop, breathe slowly and feel your breath moving through you. Go for a walk without your headphones and notice how you feel. Meditate, a little medicine for the soul, journal if you feel like it, or simply sit in silence for a while instead of immediately reaching for stimulation.
Try to leave performance aside for a while. Modern life has an incredible ability to take something you love and turn it into performance. Go running without metrics, write something unpublishable, watch a sunset without sharing it on social media. You do not need to measure everything or show everything. You can simply be present and create space to reconnect with who you are beneath the constant activity, the titles and the responsibilities.
Connect with other people, truly connect. You are profoundly relational beings. That is one of the human characteristics I love the most. Your ability for genuine connection. I am not talking about having lots of contacts. I mean building and nurturing the relationships where you feel safe being real. Put the phone away, look a friend in the eyes. Do as grandmothers do. Ask, How are you? and stay long enough to hear the answer.
And dare to be vulnerable. Let someone see beyond the perfect version of you. Share what makes you happy, but also what frightens you, what hurts and what you are struggling with. I know you often see vulnerability as weakness and try to armour yourselves against it, but armour does not only keep pain away. It also makes it harder for joy, love and belonging to reach you, because they require the same openness that makes you vulnerable in the first place. Let yourselves be known, not just seen. This is where genuine intimacy begins. Remember that shared joy is double joy, and shared sorrow is half sorrow.
And reconnect with nature and all beings. You are part of this magnificent living world. See nature for what it is, a living, ancient, generous system willing to share its wisdom with those of you willing to receive it. Walk through a forest, swim in the sea or simply look at the horizon, and allow yourselves to be amazed by how much life is happening around you, all the time.
Wonder is one of nature’s great doors back into connection. A life without wonder, without awe, slowly and progressively shrinks to the size of its own worries. Do not allow it.
And you’ll see, my dear children, while reconnecting with yourselves, with others and with our shared home, another door begins to open. The door to meaning, to something larger than yourselves. Whether you call that spirituality, God, purpose, or simply the feeling that you belong to a greater whole. The name is not so important. What matters is to let your attention move beyond the small, incessant concerns of the ego towards something larger. Self-fulfilment requires some degree of self-transcendence. I know, it sounds like a paradox, but as you humans say, the devil knows more from being old than from being the devil, and when it comes to being old, nobody beats me 😊.
Create space for the questions that busyness keeps you away from. What truly matters to me? What do I love? What do I want to serve? What kind of human being do I want to become? What is all this for?
Contemplation can create that space. Sit in silence and let the noise settle, so the deeper questions have a chance to be heard. Some of you may find your way through prayer or meditation, others through philosophy or sacred texts, through gratitude, service or art. There are many paths towards transcendence. Try to find the one that speaks to you.
And notice what all these paths have in common: attention. That is why that was my first letter to you. On attention.
When you reconnect, you pay attention again. Attention to the body reconnects you with yourselves. Attention to another human being reconnects you with others. Attention to the living world reconnects you with nature. Attention to mystery, meaning and wonder reconnects you with the spiritual dimension of life.
And as you reconnect, you can witness the healing happening. The body you come back to begins to heal the exhaustion of always being on. The wonder and love of the real world loosen the stress and the fear of missing out because, really, what could you possibly be missing that is greater than the immensity of the ocean or the sky above your head? The love and attention you give to a friend begin to heal the loneliness created by a life of shallow relationships, while meaning begins to heal that strange emptiness of a life filled with activity and performance, but little sense of what it is all for.
And slowly, wound by wound, wholeness reappears. This does not mean a life without sadness, fear, confusion or pain. It means finding your place in the universe again and learning to flow with it, with greater inner peace, trust and wisdom.
But there is something else I want you to notice. These dimensions, self, others and nature, do not exist in separate boxes. They are deeply intertwined, so when you reconnect with one, you often find yourselves moving closer to the others.
Nature, for example, helps you come back to yourselves. Forests, beaches and mountains do not judge or ask anything of you. You do not need to perform for them. You can simply be, feel your breath slow, the tension in your muscles ease, and your heart open again. In that space you can rebuild some of the inner peace and self-awareness that allow you to be truly present with another human being. And as you learn to see more deeply into yourselves, you begin to see more deeply into others too.
And it works the other way too. Being truly seen by another person, someone who tells you, “I notice you get quiet when you’re sad,” can teach you things about yourself. Self-awareness is also built in relationship, through being seen and loved by another person. You see? One door opens the other.
And our relationship with nature can open the door to meaning. Awe has a strange ability to take you beyond yourselves. Standing before the ocean, looking at the night sky, watching the light disappear behind a mountain, you can suddenly feel small and at the same time deeply connected to something immense. Some of you may feel God. For others, it may be the sacred, universal love, or the extraordinary mystery of being alive. You do not need to agree on the name for the experience to change you. For a moment, you stop asking what the world can give you and experience what it means to belong to it.
And meaning brings you back towards everything else. When you remember what you want to serve and what kind of human being you want to become, you begin to live differently. You care for your body because it is the temple of your soul. You move towards other people because you love and you belong, and you protect the natural world because you begin to understand that what happens to it also happens to you. Meaning reinforces connection, and the illusion that you are a completely separate little creature moving alone through the universe becomes harder to sustain.
My dear children, where you place your attention shapes what you see, what you nurture and, ultimately, the direction your life takes. Even in a success culture that distances you from yourselves and from the miracle of life, you can find your way back to connection.
I believe many of your disconnections share a common root: the false idea of separation. You forget that your mind belongs to a body, that you need one another, that you are nature and that your individual life forms part of something larger.
Finding your way back requires courage. And courage is another beautiful word of yours. It comes ultimately from the Latin cor, meaning heart. Courage does not mean living without fear. It means having enough heart to show up as you are despite it, to let yourselves be seen, to love even when love makes you vulnerable, and to live fully with an open heart. As you become whole again, you become more open to receive the beauty, peace and love that life has always offered you.
Come back to yourselves, to each other and to the living world. Live as if every second were your last, as if eternity were present in every moment, and let life unfold as it will.
With infinite love,
☀️ The Sun, still slightly offended by the naughty Moon
